The character Rocky from Project Hail Mary is eligible for an Oscar nomination. This was confirmed in an interview with James Ortiz, the puppeteer behind the alien, in Variety.
Ortiz’s performance as the spider-like rock alien from Andy Weir’s novel has captivated audiences this year. Rocky is one of the characters in this year’s Amazon MGM Studios science fiction film, Project Hail Mary, alongside Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling).
Brought to life through intricate puppetry and a powerful vocal performance by Ryan Gosling, the character has become the film’s most recognizable element. The studio has already begun planning to position the film for the upcoming awards season. Ortiz will be nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
